Building a School in Haiti

Jean Brulée is a rural locality in Haiti located about 55 miles north of Port-au-Prince. It is here that our friend Djounio Dorvil founded the Institution Jacque Rouman, a small school serving the children of this community.

“There is a need for this school in this particular community because this community didn’t have any school. The students walk so long to go to school and this community is over the river. When we are on a raining period the river grows so much that the students can’t pass for more than one week. They cannot go to school. Some of them don’t even have access to go to school.” - Djounio on Jean Brulée

The school was founded in September of 2015, and began with 2 staff members and 20 students. Since then, it has expanded to 8 teachers serving 170 students.

  • “I am Dorvil Djounio. I was born in Jean Brule. I did my 7-12th grade at Collage de la Grace Pignon. I was born May 30, 1988. I did my last class (13th grade) in a public school in Port-au-Prince in 2009. I will graduate from college next June. I married in May 25, 2013. I have one daughter, born 2015. Her name is Dorvil Albigaelle. My wife’s name is Dorvil Jycelene. When I was in high school I walked 1 hour to go and 1 hour to be back home for 6 years (7-12th grade). When it was the rainy period, I kept my shoes in my hands. I get a water bottle to clean my feet to put it near the school. Sometimes my uniform got a little bit dirty. During 6 years of school my parents got me new uniform 2 times.”

Djounio attended Cap-Haitian at University Polyvalent d’Haiti (UPH) to study development. Before founding Institution Jacque Rouman, he taught English at 3 schools to support his family. He is currently the principal and director of Institution Jacque Rouman where he oversees all school operations. Djounio’s interests include education, religion and sports!

  • The Institution Jacque Rouman was founded in September of 2015, and began with 2 staff members: one teacher and one person to clean. In the past several years, Djounio and his staff have made various improvements to the infrastructure and resources available to the school. They have built a classroom, recruited more students and hired more staff to expand the reach of the growing school. IJR now teaches 170 students from the Jean Brulee community, has 5 grades and over 13 staff members consisting of:

    • Principal and Founder: Djounio Dorvil

    • Director: Sainot-Renot

    • Accountant: George Chrispen

    • Teachers: Jycelene Dorvil and Polene George

    • Teacher’s Assistant and Housekeeper: Mompremier Ninise

    • A parents’ community group of 11 parents

  • Djounio envisions IJR with:

    • 8 grades

    • 500 students

    • 16 teachers

    • 2 classrooms

    • 1 office

Once these goals are met, he hopes to hire a nurse, build a library and provide lunch for students everyday.
